After a long, frustrating day of chasing leads in the Norris family murders that didn’t seem to be going anywhere except pointing back at Isaac Olol, Jess had finally headed home and quit for the day. She pulled on a pair of leggings and a T-shirt, padding around her house in bare feet, ordering herself dim sum from the local Chinese restaurant and having it delivered. The last thing she wanted to do was get back in her car. When her food arrived, she opened it, the scent of garlic and ginger floating through the air. Her stomach rumbling, she cut up one of the dumplings into small pieces for Milton to enjoy, saving the rest for herself. She looked down at him as he laid her feet while she ate watching the news. “You’re such a good boy,” she said to Milton, whose ears perked up, his head cocked to the side. She pinched a bite of the dim sum between her fingers and offered it to him. He greedily nibbled at the small bites of pork and vegetable-filled buns, licking every last bit of the food from her fingers. Just as she was halfway through her dinner, her phone rang. Charlie.

“I don’t have any updates for you,” she mumbled, her mouth full of food.

“Well, I have one for you.”

Jess leaned back on the couch, pressing the phone to her ear. “What’s that?” She felt a wave of irritation cover her. She was used to getting calls at all hours of the day and night, but part of her wished that she could have a quiet evening at home. Maybe just once she could eat dinner without being interrupted by a text, an email, or a phone call. She sighed, waiting for Charlie to answer. Such was the life of being a senior analyst, she decided.

“We’ve got a problem.”

What else was new?

Jess grunted. “By the mere fact you are calling me this late, I gathered that. What’s going on?” She pressed her lips together. She needed to check her tone. Charlie was a friend, but he was also her boss.

“I’m at Washington Memorial with one of the members of the security detail for Governor Claudia Chapman.”

Jess stood up, her face contorted into a frown. “Why? What happened?”

“I’m not exactly sure. But I need you to get over here. He was drugged. And the person that drugged him matches the ID of the fifth person at the Norris murder.”

Isaac Olol? The breath caught in Jess’s throat. “I’ll be right there.”
